Sacred Heart School (SHS) in Tullamore lit up the Esker Arts Centre from 4th to 7th November with their vibrant and energetic production of Legally Blonde: The Musical. Following the success of last year’s Chicago, the SHS team, led by director and choreographer Jay Origan and musical director James Murphy—both dedicated teachers at the school—delivered a sold-out show that surpassed all expectations.
The production was a spectacle of colour, featuring energetic choreography, dazzling costumes, and colourful sets that transported audiences directly into Elle Woods' world. Adding extra charm, two canine performers took to the stage, delighting the crowd as Elle's beloved dog, Bruiser, and Paulette's pet, Rufus. Thanks to Ms Beatty and Ms Standing for providing their beloved pets.
In addition to the evening performances, SHS hosted two matinee shows on Thursday, 7th November, exclusively for local primary schools. These special performances captivated young audiences, introducing them to the magic of musical theatre and inspiring a new generation of performers. Many 6th class students departed with enthusiasm about enrolling at SHS next September, eager to immerse themselves in the school's vibrant drama and music departments.
An adjudicator from the Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) attended Wednesday night's performance and praised the cast's cohesiveness. He highlighted their skillful handling of complex set changes, rapid costume transitions, and exuberant dance numbers. Although the official review is pending due to the ongoing competition, his initial feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
The talented cast included Eva Bergin, who gave a stellar performance as the determined and charismatic Elle Woods. Conor Fitzpatrick made a remarkable debut as Emmett, showcasing his impressive high tenor voice. Finn Coleman brought suave charm to the role of Warner, Elle’s ex-boyfriend, opposite Keela Lenehan as the sophisticated Vivienne. Ella Condron's comedic timing shone as Paulette, and Rhea Schreiber impressed audiences with her energetic portrayal of Brooke, combining singing and skipping with flair.
The Delta Nu trio—Chloe Maher (Serena), Anna Middleton (Margot), and Isabelle McCumiskey (Pilar)—added humour and flair, while Ruadhán Ó hAirmhi delighted the audience as the charming UPS guy, Kyle. Second-year students Caoimhe Brady and Manar Ater delivered standout performances as Enid and Sandeep, showing great promise for the future.
In its second year of collaboration with Coláiste Choilm, the production featured 12 male students, including seasoned performers Dillon Coyne, Victor Kelly, Shane MacLachlan, and newcomers Conor Moore and Lucas Burke Tracey . Over 100 students and staff were involved, with enthusiastic first-year students even contributing to choreography. Ms. Origan praised Dance Captains Isabelle and Elizabeth for their dedication and commended the students for their monumental efforts.
SHS extends heartfelt gratitude to patrons, sponsors, and local businesses whose support made this production possible. Special thanks go to Esker Arts Centre for hosting, as well as local partners Roken Lighting and All Set Scenery for their professional contributions.
With this dazzling production, Sacred Heart School has once again raised the bar for student theatre in Tullamore. The community eagerly awaits the adjudicator's full review and looks forward to next year’s performance, already anticipating another opportunity to witness the incredible talent nurtured at SHS.
