Last week, Sacred Heart Secondary School in Tullamore opened its doors to welcome sixth-class pupils from local primary schools for their eagerly anticipated Future First-Years Fun Morning. Designed to offer a glimpse into secondary school life, the event was a resounding success, leaving the young visitors excited about the prospect of joining the Sacred Heart community.
The morning was packed with engaging activities that highlighted the school’s commitment to blending tradition with innovation. Aspiring engineers enjoyed a hands-on introduction to Robotics, guided by Miss Burke and Miss Meleady, where they explored coding and problem-solving. Over in the IT department, Miss Enrique and Miss Higgins introduced students to touchscreen laptops, a cornerstone of Sacred Heart’s learning approach as a Microsoft Showcase School. Pupils eagerly explored the digital tools that will soon be part of their daily classroom experience.
In the creative arts, Mr Murphy and Miss Origan led vibrant sessions in music, drama, and dance, giving pupils the chance to sing, act, and move while experiencing Sacred Heart’s thriving extracurricular scene. Meanwhile, over in the Home Economics kitchens, students worked alongside Miss Direen and Miss Lawrence, baking festive Christmas cookies and learning practical skills. The students’ enthusiasm was clear as they decorated their delicious creations, with many imagining themselves as future participants in Sacred Heart’s Transition Year Mini Company catering projects.
The event’s structure allowed students to sample a wide range of subjects, meet the friendly teaching staff, and explore the school’s facilities. Sacred Heart’s warm and inclusive atmosphere made a strong impression, reflecting the school’s ethos of fostering both personal and academic growth.
Principal Miss McKenna expressed her pride in the event’s success, stating: “This fun morning is an excellent opportunity to showcase everything Sacred Heart has to offer – from innovative learning to hands-on activities and vibrant extracurricular opportunities.”
While enrolments for 2025 are now closed, Sacred Heart remains one of the top choices for secondary education in the Midlands. For those fortunate enough to secure a place, the September start promises to be the beginning of an exciting chapter filled with creativity, innovation, and community spirit!
